Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Pop-up Book

This large format book based on the well-loved classic will keep children and adults fascinated and intrigued for hours. Each page is a tour de force of construction in card with full-colour illustrations created with equal imagination and wit.

It is a book to keep forever, to treasure, to take out on winter evenings when the fire is burning and snuggle up together with on the sofa, to pore over every detail. Curl up with it at bedtime and enjoy reading aloud the wonderful story, which is abridged from the Lewis Carroll original. It is a book to return to, as a child and as an adult, to marvel at the combined creative genius of both the well-loved author and the modern artist.

The first spread opens to reveal, quite literally, a forest of trees which sprout as the book is opened and protrude beyond the borders of the book. The scene is depicted in vivid colours: Alice running across an English hillside while her sister reads a story and the White Rabbit emerging from the trees, examining his pocket watch in consternation. Look closely at the trees to see the face of the Cheshire cat, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts subtly depicted amidst the leaves. A flap printed with the words, ‘Open me’ reveals a concertina pop-up rabbit hole, through which can be seen the falling Alice. Next to this complicated yet entrancing scene are two narrowly folded pages of text, which open to reveal two further layouts, one with the bottle and cake from which Alice will drink and eat, the next portraying the hapless Alice submerged in a lake created by her own tears – and she really does swim! Move the page back and forth and her legs and arms slice through the water, mimicking swimming strokes… and that’s only the first two pages!

Subsequent spreads show the giant Alice trapped in the house of the White Rabbit, legs and arms protruding from doors, chimney and windows; the Mad Hatter’s tea party pops up with a full table, and there is even the game of croquet with live flamingoes. Every page is beautifully illustrated in a style that echoes the famous originals by Sir John Tenniel, featuring more astounding feats of cut-out trickery and moveable detail. The book continues to enchant and delight throughout, with colourful tableaux exploding from every page. The eye finds fresh detail as the pages are revisited, and the sheer genius of the final piece will never fail to inspire an amazed gasp of delight.

“Sabuda has surprises on every spread, even given how well we all know Alice. Each scene builds the narrative … but the final spread is such an engineering tour de force that I can only sympathize with the expert Chinese printers and assemblers who laboriously constructed each copy by hand.” – Steven Heller, art director of The New York Times Book Review

About the Artist

Robert Sabuda, dubbed the ‘Prince of Paper’ by Publishers Weekly, discovered pop-up books in a dentist’s waiting room as a child, and immediately went home and began constructing his own out of manila envelopes. Eventually he became a graphic artist and children’s book illustrator, publishing many ground-breaking pop-up books to general acclaim. Sabuda has been awarded the Meggendorfer Prize three times, an award instituted by the Movable Book Society of America, as well as Notable Children’s Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies designation, Children’s Book Council, and New York Public Library Best Children’s Book of the Year designation, both 1990; Magic Reading AwardParenting magazine, and Hungry Mind Review Children’s Book of Distinction designation, both 1992; Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor Award, 1994, Gold Medal, Dimension Illustration Awards, 1994.
