About Us
Company History
Temptation was started in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, in 1983, by married couple Mike and Sheena Adams. They had a simple retailing philosophy: shopping should be fun!
The Early Days
Mike and Sheena set about creating a store that would sell unusual gifts, at a price people could afford, and to make sure that customers felt comfortable while shopping. They felt, (and still feel), that too many shops take their customers for granted, so they tried to create stores where customers feel welcome, are listened to rather than sold to, and where the goods on offer are priced within the reach of all budgets.
Expansion of the Company
We now trade from five large town-centre locations: in Windsor, Henley-on-Thames, Beaconsfield, Amersham and Berkhamsted, as well as operating an award-winning online operation at www.temptationgifts.com and www.campusgifts.co.uk.
Through the 1980s and 1990s the company grew responsibly and organically, moving into larger premises in our home town of Berkhamsted and then opening stores in Beaconsfield, Amersham, and St. Albans. Turnover continued to grow, helped by continued reinvestment and the building of a central warehouse and head office in Amersham. The company became a limited company in 1999, but ownership remains entirely in the hands of Mike and Sheena Adams.
The 2000s saw expansion within the existing infrastructure - the closure of the St. Albans branch at the end of its lease notwithstanding - through expansion, extension and renovation of the existing stores. In 2009 we opened our first new store in several years, a beautiful 2000 sq ft location in the very centre of Henley-on-Thames. In July of that year, the web operation moved into its own, greatly expanded, premises with considerable (and much-needed) room for further growth. April of 2011 saw the opening of our new flagship store in Windsor.
Annual turnover in this financial year will exceed five million pounds, small perhaps by the standards of the big High Street multiples, but big enough to make us one of the most successful independent gift retailers in the United Kingdom. And big enough for you to have complete confidence in our integrity and professionalism.

Quite simply, Temptation sees itself in partnership with its customers. We try to treat our customers the way we ourselves want to be treated when we go shopping. We want you to spend what you can afford, not what would maximise our profits. We want you to buy the right gift, not the most expensive gift, and above all we want you to feel confident that if you have a problem with what you have bought, we will do everything we can to solve that problem. Buying gifts from our website should not be any different from coming into one of our stores. Unlike many companies selling goods over the web, we have the experience of many years of retailing behind us, and the goods we offer are all in stock in our warehouse. We have tried to create a website that is easy to use and fun to visit. We have almost 4,000 gifts online but that selection is growing and changing all the time, so if you can't find what you want on this visit, call again soon!
